Even more disturbing is that, according to the Institute for Policy Studies, it will take 228 years to close that gap. Land and home ownership are the key components in generational wealth building, with housing equity making up about two-thirds of all wealth for the typical household. Meanwhile racist lending and housing policies previously prevented Black people from owning land, acquiring loans or gaining access to certain neighborhoods, the effects of which are still felt today with policies that amplify inequality still continuing today. Similarly, racist policies and land theft have negatively impacted land ownership and Black farmers, who today make up just 1.4 percent of the nation’s farm owners and 4.7 million acres, down very significantly from nearly a million Black farmers and 41.4 million acres of land in 1920. Nearly a 90 percent loss. One might correctly conclude that the time is now for restoration, reclamation and equity. What we know is that for us to see the change we want to see in the world outside, we must start inside. With such an unusual beginning, her life’s journey was bound to unfold into an odyssey of creative survival. Through these circumstances came her first language in which creativity played a vital role to communicate her thoughts in order to navigate the unjust social boundaries placed on Black people throughout the diaspora. Her creative tools of insightful expression manifested visually into the narratives of her art, portraying her family’s pattern of movement by displacement, although traumatic were mitigated by a nomadic way of life. For many of us the "American Dream", was deferred by racial disparities of income and the segregated redlining of neighborhoods, so our movement from place to place was out of necessity. To mitigate this discontent, Dominique's reimagining of home became her visual aesthetic as well. Through her experiences of these common dwellings came her introduction to assemblage, and out of which she honed her ability to restore and recreate home from the debilitated houses that she and her family lived in. Creativity seeded her dreams of the Nomad and her resilience was maintained by the family’s belief that “home was an idea that resided within them, no matter where they were”. It's been more than forty-six moves later and Dominique’s dream of her nomadic art home is now being realized in the footprint of a tiny mobile dwelling. With a license plate, "NOMAD46", and pulled by a 1950 box truck, this travelers caravan functions as her home and an artist residence on wheels. Now in 2020, the necessity of our times culturally, economically and environmentally means that we must respond to our basic needs, so I've found my path as I walk in the footprints of my nomadic ancestors, who understood that finding a way to being at "Home in the World" meant that our "Home is the Earth". In late August I shared a post from a Black RV’ing family, Soulful RV Family, discussing the ongoing safety issues Black people face in RV Parks in dealing with racism. This experience is a common occurance and a major safety concern, as this family’s terrorizing experience shows, as well as this most recent example of the experience of a Black man on a camping trip demonstrates. These concerns are often a deterrent to Black people to even consider getting involved in those kinds of activities, as they already know the potential danger. The post certainly resonated with me as I’ve had to relocate my tiny house twice now due to my own personal concerns of safety while dealing with racism; once in 2015 when it was in a RV Park in Charlotte and just a few months ago when located on a farm in a rural area, just outside Charlotte. The post also resonated with me because it’s the conversation I’ve been trying to host within the tiny house movement for the past 3 1/2 years, within the broader tiny house acceptance conversations and for awareness of experiences that weren’t being discussed. In my opinion, if we’re addressing concerns of housing and building community, these concerns should most certainly be included in the conversations. Very unfortunately, those conversations weren’t received well or received at all. In addition to the challenges faced with seeking placement locations for tiny houses on wheels, Black people must also factor in safety concerns related to racism that’s prevalent in the areas that are most accepting of them. As the current world climate continues to decline and become even more accepting of racist behavior, this remains an ongoing safety concern for Black people to just simply be able to navigate throughout the world. One of the commenters on my post, suggested that there needed to be a “symbol” that people could place on their property in order to self identify as someone willing and ready to help those (hear “Black people”) in need. A symbol that represented a “safe person” and/or a “safe place”. If you’re familiar with history you know that symbols of this sort have also been necessary in the past and much to the dismay of many, myself included, they are needed again. With that suggestion in mind, I tagged a few people I considered to be “allies” in the movement because, while racism is our experience, anti-racism work isn’t really the work for Black folks, only white folks can end racism. Macy Miller, Minimotives, responded to my tag and post and hence our partnership on this project began.
